Onanism isn’t even about masturbation, it’s about a society that depended on offspring to care for the elderly. Women with no children, when they were old and their husbands long dead, basically received a death sentence. An elderly woman in a preindustrial society wasn’t going to be hunting, carrying heavy water jugs, gathering firewood, building and repairing a tent and fending off wild animals. To be able to survive, a woman NEEDED children.

Onan, in Genesis 38, pulled out to basically “hit it and quit it.” He wanted to fuck Tamar over, literally. He was going to get his and she could die childless for all he cared. That’s why God struck him down.
